the Digital Age

emergence and education

i just read an article about clubbers who have opted to have a glass chip inserted in their arms or hips, that act as debit cards, so they don't have to carry anything and can wear tight clothes without having stuff in their pockets. Anytime they buy a drink at the bar, they are scanned to pay. VeriChip is the name of the company. i did some research after i read about it and found out some bank employees are chipped to curtail fraud/robbery, people are opting to have their medical records, bloodtypes, identification stored in their chips and i found tons of articles about research that has been done to use VeriChip type technology in criminals. science fiction is starting to sound a bit less fictitious.

Even EZPass creeps me out sometimes. Does anyone remember the divorce case where the guys wife proved infidelity with his EZPass records and got WAAAYY more money? I like my privacy-it's my freedom. Although I guess having the ability to do all this stuff without hindrance is a type of freedom as well.

My dog is microchipped. I think I said that once before in this class. She was that way when we bought her 4 years ago. However, I've always been a bit skeeved by it, so I never got it "hooked up". It kind of freaks me out that she's got something underneath her skin, let alone that it could allow her to be tracked. I don't even like getting my mantoux every year for my summer job at the hospital, because I don't like seeing anything under my skin, I'd never get tatoos because the whole ink under the skin thing is gross, and I definitely would not be all about having a "debit card" inserted under my skin. I'll stick to shoving money/credit card in my shoes, or having my husband handle the money and hold my ID.

The scary feeling that we have when we start to see the realization of technology that we believed to be fiction is part of what I am writing my paper on, so reading this blog and the comments to it made me laugh a little. It seems the chips have been a long time coming. I remember hearing about computerized chip implants for bank accounts almost 10 years ago. Some people view it as a mark of the beast because of the fact that it can be on the back of your hand and some have even suggested in the forhead... part of the title of my paper is "the greatest evil and the greatest savior" I think our responses to new technologies fall into that title pretty well.

It is disturbing. If you walk around with a cell phone you're pretty much chipped anyway. As Little Brother demonstrates, the question is who gets to control and access that information. It's all about encryption.

Verichip makes perfect sense. It would be a great thing to have at the beach or a water park as well. lol.

That is insane!! Verichip sounds eerily similar to what we have read about in these books... in terms of implants of various sorts and for various purposes. Wow.

omg I guess so, this science fiction stuff is becoming too real for me. I can only imagine what the world will be like for my son...and what I imagine scares me!
