NextWorld

OMG I know the class is over but I just saw this program on the Discovery Channel called NextWorld and it was about some of the future technologies we encountered in Cyberpunk. They mentioned smartdust (nanotechnology) and cities built on water. Check it out!! OK Finally. ADIOS Continue

A Little Sad It's Over....

Or Not... ;-) I so so so enjoyed this course. I'm a little sad it's over. I would have loved if it was a full-semester course I was taking and could read even more books and maybe even watch a few movies or something. I'm so so happy, though, that it is over as it put a lot of stress on my family life. Right now my kid is freaking out downstairs and can't go to sleep and his dad is being a ding-dong about putting him to bed. So I can get back to my "regular" job of motherhood after my workday… Continue

Anyone Else NOT done?? Please read!

At the library right now feeling sorry for myself. FInished about 5 pages but just can't get the flow going-perhaps I picked the wrong topic or maybe I am just a bit rusty from not writing for a couple of years. ANyone else having trouble. I picked the topic of Survival of the Fittest: Outlaw Darwinism in Cyberpunk. I'm basically writing about how the future as portrayed in cyberpunk works is a harsher reality where law-breaking is necessary and even rewarded with success and longevity. LIke te… Continue

Little Brother explaining parts of my life...

The thing I loved best about Little Brother was how Doctorow put aspects of technology into layman's terms for the average person. Unlike Neuromancer, which I loved, we don't have to figure out much. It's straight up. I do medical billing for a living. Yesterday I was doing what I always do. Got the bills together in a batch online, ready for submission. I clicked onto AT&T Global Network Client, which is a program we have to fire up before accessing the Ivans program we use to submit the cl… Continue

Working My 2nd Job

Which is night person at a drainage company (fun fun). So I get a lot of free time to read, write, and get some work done. I love the freedom of being able to have hours to devote to this class without distractions at least once a week. I requested tomorrow night, too, so I can get a good start on my project. So far, tonight, I have been reading, browsing the website, brainstorming topics for the final paper, and checking out youtube for stuff on William Gibson. I'm really enjoying myself. Kind… Continue

I just CAN'T Trust You...

Technology. This week has made me question the soundness of relying too much on technology. Our washing machine broke and we have to buy a new one (the laundry, meanwhile, is piling up). Joe, my fiance, owns a landscaping company and his ride-mower broke AGAIN. Finally, in relation to this class, my blog has only worked ONCE out of the three times I tried to message this week and I had major issues sending my third review. With all of this going on, I'm not too sure I'm looking forward to a futu… Continue

Yay

I'm feeling more confident in this class than I had been feeling. Just got my grade back from my second book review and am happy with it. This time, I tried to imagine I was really writing a review for an AUDIENCE, such as in a magazine. I think that really helped me to write a better review. The first book review I wrote I was gearing it towards Prof. Reid and I believe that made me write with an essay style in mind. Anyways I am blabbering. I just read Prof. Reid's sample review, with comments… Continue

Wednesday Night Blog

Finally back on digitalage. I was here earlier posted replies to a few blogs. I'm about to go check out the discussions. I just started reading Distraction. I'm finding this novel so completely different from the previous three. There are similarities but the "feel" I get from it is different. So far, I'm not sure how much I will end up liking this book. Contrary to what I've seen other people post, I'm actually enjoying the fact that it is so political. It seems Sterling is making a stat… Continue

Last Night Blogs One: Ding Dong Done! Two: He, She, and It. WHere's the comma???

ONE: I'm such a ding dong. That's what I always say instead of really berating myself in front of my children. Anyways, I am just wrapping up the review here. I'm always cutting it close. I have been reading other peoples reviews but don't think they have really influenced mine, although they ARE good. I'm liking the way mine is flowing right now. I'd be surprised if I do worse (grade-wise) on this one than the last. It's funny. I was toying with the idea of writing restaurant reviews for a whil… Continue

Sunday Schoolday...

OK Just trying to keep on top of anything. I'm less than fifty pages away from the end of He, She, and It, and I am just really enjoying it. I was just reading the discussion board for He, She, and It in wiki and some of the discussions here in ning. I'll be heading back over there shortly to add my own thoughts on the novel. The discussion on Feminism really got me thinking. I believe that feminism means choice for women. For example, I have the option to work where I please, where pants, and h… Continue

Schoolwork at work....

Well Friday is my two job day and at my second job I get to do a lot of schoolwork. So since 4pm I've been reading the articles, reading He, She, and It (which I am about halfway through), and perusing this site. I'll post a longer blog later. So far I am finding this book immensely enjoyable. It's sweet. It makes a person think about the fairness of creation. When it is mentioned that all creation can be a bad thing (I forget the exact quote) it really hits home. Everytime someone creates somet… Continue

Last Night's Blogs

Well, for some reason, my blogs were not posting last night so I will just summarize what I had said. Title: Back Online Again Body: Finally, after four days, our house is back online. It's been one of those weeks. I got a ton of reading done and have been looking forwards to getting our reviews back. Since I haven't been online, except for brief periods at work, I will be spending a lot of time tonight just catching up on the discussions. 2nd Blog: Well, just spend a couple of hours checking o… Continue

Boy, this is rough.

Well, just browsed around the website. Checked out other people's comments. Added my two-cents on the article, although I was not as vocal about disliking it as I had been on my post a short while ago. It may seem like I didn't enjoy it because it was difficult, however that was not it. I just thought some points could have been better. She did raise some interesting questions and that can never be a bad thing. I really enjoyed the first article we read for the class. This must be one of those c… Continue

Virtual Bodies and Flickering Signifiers

Finished reading the article this morning. Thought I'd write down my reactions. I did NOT enjoy reading this article. Yes, it was difficult to grasp and I did have to read it a couple of times but that was not the problem. While Hayles did bring up many valid points and pointed me in directions I would never have dreamed of going, I feel that she really stretched to make some points fit her thesis. It reminded me of some papers I have written, where I was stretching a little bit. Yes, it was my… Continue

I'm Online Briefly

And I have about a hundred pages left in The Diamond Age and still have to read the article. Ahhh, such is life. I'm going to go check out some discussions and throw my two-cents in. I am really enjoying The Diamond Age. Neuromancer was also enjoyable but the two books are so DIFFERENT. The little bits of humor speckled throughout The Diamond Age have made me smile frequently. The detail that Stephenson goes into with almost every technology is astounding. I really admire that the author took th… Continue

Big Day Tomorrow...

I could spend hours every day just reading people's posts online. It's something I did before this class. I'd go through various stages where I'd read a certain person's blog, or comments on the local newspaper site, or reviews of movies on amazon. Anyways, I'm just trying to make a to-do list in my head of what needs to be done so that the rest of this week goes smoothly. If I don't even attempt to create my to-do lists, NOTHING happens and that is even worse than not completing the list. I hav… Continue

Whoa Wiki...

Finally I found what I was looking for. The ENG 529 Guidelines was just what I needed to read. I'm not sure, but I think I just finished my first post on wiki. I wrote some things that I had meant to blog about at some point and kept forgetting. I need to write more things down as I am reading, because my memory just doesn't cut it. Throughout Neuromancer, I noticed how Gibson describes various people, places, and objects. It's very unique, especially the frequency they appear (on every page) an… Continue

The End of Neuromancer/Images of Dark City

I SOMEHOW just finished Neuromancer this weekend, between the three thousand other things on my plate. After finishing it, I realized that the entire time I was reading I pictured the world presented by Case to be just like the world in the movie Dark City. I'm not sure if anyone has seen this movie. The descriptions of Chiba made me feel like I was watching the movie in my mind. All the images, the neon lights, the dark shadows...I can't put my finger on it. I'll be watching the movie this week… Continue
