Final Paper

I enojyed writing my final paper. I found the research interesting, and I learned a new long word: post-modernism. It was pretty cool to synthesize the novel and the different kinds of research all together. I am not at all confident that I did it well, but I'm remaining hopeful.

It's nice to have it done, and now I can concentrate on getting Little Brother read and then post a few more blogs and call it a successful summer! Ya-hoo!

Absorbed in Distraction

I got behind in my reading, and I hate blogging about a book that I haven’t finished, which kabobbled my whole schedule a bit, but I really liked Distraction a lot. It was the most traditional novel of the lot, I would say (as much as I liked He, She and It). As a matter of fact, I have decided to write my paper on Distraction. It speaks to some of my own fears about our society’s future, and I also think it is the most reflective of our country/society as it is now. I liked… Continue

Caught Up in the Matrix

I watched The Matrix today because I've never seen it and I wanted to see the connections now that I have a bit of cyberpunk background. And I really enjoyed it. I mean, I am one of those people who likes to watch Keanu Reeves act (and I literally mean watch him act). But I also enjoyed the double-layered plot, with the Matrix and reality interwoven. It reminded me of the plot of He, She and It in a way. The whole not quite human but not quite machine thing. Anyhow, I liked it a lot. Two thumbs… Continue

Golems and Dybbuks

I found Anolik's article on golems and dybbuks extremely interesting, especially to hear how the modern takes on the legends manipulate and change the traditional legends. I also found it interesting that the use of the legends by females is seen as an attempt to work themselves into a position of significance within a social sect that allows them no power.

I found the lesbian angle to be quite interesting, too. The fact that women were considered so unimportant that they could do whatever they… Continue

The Jewish Question

I found the Jewish undertones of He, She and It really interesting. I don't entirely know what to make of it, so I can't offer any particularly insightful comments. I know enough history to get the main ideas and references, but I'm not entirely sure what to make of them. I understand that Judaism has been under attack for forever, and that in each century, some social disease gets blamed on the Jews (the Plague, Germany's economic hardships, etc.), but I'm not entirely sure why it was so very p… Continue
