Tell us a little about yourself and your interest in the course you're taking.
I'm registered for the Cyberpunk Lit course. I have read some sci fi, fantasy fiction, cyberpunk--by no means my area of expertise or even my favorite sort of literature, but something i am interested in exploring more. I have a degree in women's studies and am working on a Masters in English Language and English Lit with a concentration in multi-cultural literature. I am mostly interested in the ways the fantastic is used to mirror/discuss real issues, political and social commentary, marginalization, exclusivness, etc.,
What are your reading and writing habits? (i.e. what do you like to write and read?)
If i had to pick one specific genre--i love magic realism, but i love to read period. Native American lit is another favorite. i read mostly fiction and write mostly reality. i work full time and am a mama, so most of what i have time to write currently is for my program--critical analysis, personal essays, research papers.

Honeslty, i will be stepping outside my comfort zone a bit in taking this class, but am (nervously) excited to do so.
How would you describe your general attitude toward computers and related technology?
Use 'em when I have to

DONE!!!!

I just finished my paper and i am so relieved! i need to step away for a bit and then proof and scale down a little--i went a bit beyond the 3,000 words and i'm not sure if that's ok. But, i am proud--in the wake of a stomach bug that swept through the entire house, a vet emergency for our poor kitty, Gideon, and out of town guests that have left me in the midst of 5-7 boys at any given moment ranging in age from 3-7, including 2 sets of twins for the past 3 days--i still managed to write my pap… Continue

final paper meltdown...

i am using a personal day this week solely to focus in my final paper. By then, i am assuming my poor kiddo will be over his wretched stomach bug and i will have miraculously walked away from all the water bottle, food, kiss, germy hand sharing unscathed by his nasty virus. He will be at daycare. My husband will be at work. But, i don't know what i'm wiritng my paper on....i keep reading all these articles, that lead me to more articles and journals, and i'm finding a lot of fascinating stuff--j… Continue

Microchipped Humans?

i just read an article about clubbers who have opted to have a glass chip inserted in their arms or hips, that act as debit cards, so they don't have to carry anything and can wear tight clothes without having stuff in their pockets. Anytime they buy a drink at the bar, they are scanned to pay. VeriChip is the name of the company. i did some research after i read about it and found out some bank employees are chipped to curtail fraud/robbery, people are opting to have their medical records, bloo… Continue

Ghost in the Shell

My husband dumped a few of his movies onto my thumb drive that he thought i should watch--to give me a further glimpse into the world of cyberpunk and also to get a visual. Mainly, i think he's enjoying my sudden interest and ability to have a conversation with him with textual (and now visual) reference. i thought i might use one of the films for my 3rd review, but i'm not sure--i may go with Distraction--writing a film review seems a bit more difficult than a book for me. i just finished watch… Continue

Well, Ghost in the Shell is certainly a cyberpunk film. Brazil is sci-fi, a kind of darkly comic 1984. I haven't seen the last one, but it's more in the sci-fi/fantasy mode. I've been fairly lax about the reviews, so choose any of these you want.

You can choose another text. Which text do you have in mind?

Not sure if I sent you this before, but if you send me your other e-mail address, then I'll send you an invite from PBwiki to that address. Hopefully that will resolve the problem.

Wow sound like you've got an interesting perspective to come from given your family's interests. If you really wanted to be freaked out by some of these moral/ethical issues, take a look at the human 2.0 video I posted if you get a chance.

Hello Megan, I think you might find some interesting aesthetic connections between magic realism and cyberpunk. I can also understand the connection with Native American lit as well. I often teach Silko's Ceremony.
