transferring from teaching "academic" writing

In her recent CCC article, Elizabeth Wardle extends upon the argument she made with Doug Downs earlier in challenging the field to move away from conventional FYC pedagogies and curricula. As she notes, and I agree, the fundamental problem with...

digital ethics and scholarship: more on Technological Ecologies and Sustainability

As mentioned in the previous post, some further thoughts on the recently released Technological Ecologies and Sustainability (free download). Admittedly, I am skipping around somewhat in the collection and writing today about two of the pieces in the final section...

preliminary thoughts on Technological Ecologies and Sustainability

I've started read Technological Ecologies and Sustainability eds. Dànielle Nicole DeVoss, Heidi A. McKee, and Dickie Selfe: the first book out of the Computers and Composition Digital Press (available here). This new press is an exciting proposition and it's great...

Chronicle Article on the Internet and Student Writing

In the Chronicle of Higher Education, Josh Keller reports on the research and debate over the impact of the Internet on student writing. Not surprisingly, there are differences of opinion to be found. While there is a general sense that...

taking speed seriously in English

James Brown offers some interesting observations on the response of our discipline to speed, in terms of Virilio's dromology. As is certainly a truism, the world keeps getting faster. We thought it was fast in the 80s or 90s but...

Profile Information

Tell us a little about yourself and your interest in the course you're taking.
Well, I was born in England in 1969 but grew up mostly in the US. I got my PhD in 1997 from SUNY-Albany and have been at Cortland since 2001. I've been married since 1995 and have two kids. I study the emerging media and networks as they relate to rhetoric and the composition of various media (not just writing). Beyond my work and family my main activities are meditation, jogging, reading, and experimenting with new things online.
What are your reading and writing habits? (i.e. what do you like to write and read?)
I would say I spend two or more hours writing nearly every day. Some days it might be more like six or eight hours. I spend three or four hours reading (far more than I spend watching tv)... especially if you count reading and writing online, which I do. That's where I do most of my reading and writing.

I like reading nonfiction (mostly about technology) and some science fiction.
How would you describe your general attitude toward computers and related technology?
Love 'em
What "Web 2.0" websites do you use?
Facebook, YouTube, Flickr (or other photo-sharing), Delicious (or other social bookmarking), Wikis, Blogs, Second Life

No map for these territories

I got No Maps for These Territories from Netflix this weekend. It's a biography of William Gibson. You can see part of it on YouTube. It is really interesting and provides a great insight into Gibson's work.

Sick this weekend

I've been quite sick this weekend and totally laid out. As such you can see I haven't been much involved. I hope to get back on track over the next few days.

Continuing our diamond age discussion

So I've posted a new question in our discussion about the Drummers and I've responded to some of our ongoing discussions and questions about the book reviews.

Tomorrow I'll probably get started reading our next novel. Also I'll open up a discussion of the Katherine Hayles article I've asked you to read.

Back from a long weekend

So I hope we all enjoyed the long weekend, our one vacation in this intensive course. I polished off Diamond Age, and I'm looking forward to discussing it all with you. Starting tomorrow I'm going to start assuming you're mostly finished with the novel, so beware of spoilers at that point!

Meanwhile I'm enjoying our discussion of literacy.

Also I've posted a sample book review. You can find a link to it in the book review discussion we are having.

Pushing on with Diamond Age

I'm into the second half of the novel now. It's interesting to read it in the context of thinking about my own kids' education and reading experiences. When I read it last, it was before my kids were in school. I'm really interested to see how you will respond to the philosophy articulated through the text.

Thanks Alex,

I was told about ning by Dr. Stearns. I took a lot of new media classes at UB in my undergrad, and I've been looking for a place with good discussion on digital/media topics.

Thanks!

Thanks for answering my questions on the future of online education. Your point about children "needing supervision" is an interesting one. I guess it just goes to show that "education" is as much about having a place for children to go while adults work as anything that has to do with "knowledge".

Hi Professor Reid,

I assumed that, due to my past difficulties with Webct, you read my 2nd review on the wiki (I posted it at 5:30 a.m Tues. morning). I am worried, however, that you didn't. I just checked Webct (I have finally gotten through) and didn't find any comments. Let me know if you would still like it posted in Webct, or if the wiki is sufficient. Thanks.

my husband put some of his movies on my thumb drive that he thinks i should watch--Ghost in a Shell, Brazil, City of Los Children--i haven't watched any yet, but researched them. Anime probably isn't my thing, but the other two seem interesting--are either a possibility?
